Some titles almost write themselves. noFi describes herself as a genre-fluid DJ, is based in Toronto and plays as if the borders between pop, house, bass and techno were suggestions rather than rules. These two sets for Suck My Deck show different sides of the same identity: hot, loud and not especially interested in fitting neatly on one shelf.
Toronto, Pride and Suck My Deck #
On her official page, noFi sums herself up in two lines: “Genre-fluid DJ who loves to dance” and “Based in Toronto”. It is a short description, but it fits what can be heard — and seen — in these recordings.
Suck My Deck grew out of six Toronto friends who learned to DJ and decided to play what they like, even when what they like changes a lot. Its DJ roster includes noFi and JOOOF. Pride Toronto describes the pair as the duo behind the project and traces their debut to a small Pride party in Kensington Market in 2024.
The first video comes directly from that setting. Hot Girl Hyperpop DJ Set | Pride Party in Toronto | noFi was published by Suck My Deck on July 14, 2024, and spends 48 minutes moving through pop vocals, house and bass with plenty of dance-floor momentum. SOPHIE, Charli XCX, Tove Lo, Rico Nasty and Caroline Polachek appear in the tracklist, but so do Mau P, Chris Lorenzo, Hamdi and Eli Brown. Hot Girl Hyperpop is a very good entrance; it is not a complete definition.
That is where genre-fluid stops sounding like a neat line for a bio. noFi keeps the energy and her taste for recognisable pop references, but changes the weight, colour and direction of the set without asking the genre police — who, fortunately, do not seem to have made the guest list.
The other side: darker, just as physical #
The second video, Dark Girl Hyperpop DJ Set | SLAY Themed Party | noFi (Scooby), was published on December 21, 2024. It was recorded at the SLAY Halloween party at Bar Cathedral in Toronto and compresses its darker mood into 35 minutes.
Elohim, REZZ, One True God, Grimes and BANKS pull the selection into heavier, shadowier territory; COBRAH, Kim Petras and Britney Spears keep a link to the first set’s shameless pop streak. When Skrillex, Sara Landry and Zingara enter the picture, the continuity becomes clear: the atmosphere changes, but the urge to move the room does not.
Between bright Pride energy and Halloween in Scooby mode, noFi does not need to choose one version of herself. Genre-fluid is not a way to avoid a definition; across these two videos, it is the most honest one.
