HAPAX in live-stream form

HAPAX are a band from Naples, Italy, working between darkwave, post-punk and gothic rock. The project started around Michele Mozzillo on vocals and bass, and Diego Cardone on guitar, programming and visual work. The line-up later gained live drums, first with Fabio Malfi and then with Francesco Giuliano, who is also credited for recording, mixing and mastering the 2021 live material.

Their path begins with Stream Of Consciousness, originally released in 2014, continues with Cave in 2016 and reaches a more introspective phase with Monade in 2019. The band also built a presence outside Italy, including a South American tour and dates in the United States in 2018. The pandemic interrupted normal touring, but it also pushed HAPAX into a set of live streams later released in limited formats.

The main video here is the concert dedicated to Stream Of Consciousness. What makes it interesting is that it does not feel like a disposable emergency stream. It has real audiovisual care, well-chosen guests and almost works as a communal rereading of the first album. The guest list crosses several names in the dark/gothic scene, with links to Ash Code, Black Nail Cabaret, Then Comes Silence, The Foreign Resort, Geometric Vision and other projects.

Why this concert works

The live-stream format could easily have softened the band’s identity, but the opposite happens here. The sound keeps HAPAX’s characteristic coldness: firm bass, restrained guitar, dark programming, dry drums and a voice that feels more narrative than theatrical. The guests do not turn the concert into a scattered compilation; they open small windows inside the same atmosphere.

There is a clear advantage in this set: Stream Of Consciousness already had an album architecture, and the live stream respects that continuity. “When The Marble Falls” and “Spleen” stand out because of the collaborations, but they still belong fully to the band’s universe. Even when external voices and sensibilities enter, the foundation remains HAPAX.

“Elegy”, from Monade, shows the band’s more mature and melancholic phase. It is less immediate than some of the first-album material, but it helps explain the move toward denser, more inward writing.

“Spleen”, featuring Emese Árvai-Illés of Black Nail Cabaret, is one of the strongest moments from the live stream. The guest voice adds elegant tension without pulling focus away from the original structure.

“When The Marble Falls”, with Claudia Nottebella and Alessandro Belluccio of Ash Code, works almost as a direct bridge between the Naples post-punk/darkwave scene and the wider European network around the genre.

“Survive The Night”, originally from Cave, pushes the band toward a more direct energy. It stays dark, but has more rhythmic urgency and shows that HAPAX are not only about atmosphere.

Final note

This group of videos is a good entry point into HAPAX because it shows three sides of the band: the origin point of Stream Of Consciousness, the later density of Monade and the more direct force of Cave. I would start with the main live stream, then move to “Spleen” and “When The Marble Falls”, where the guests help illuminate the writing without changing its identity.
